Description
Pair of late 19th century French Empire style picture frames
French, Late 19th century
Height 16cm, width 11.5cm, depth 2/ 7 cm
Circular in shape and mounted in an easel style, this pair of small, late 19th century frames has been crafted from gilt metal. The design takes stylistic inspiration from the fashions of the French Empire period that developed roughly during the period 1800-1815. Characterised by its references to ancient Greek and Roman iconography, the style emerges in these frames through the inclusion of laurel wreaths, a symbol of success and prosperity.
The frames currently contain a paper printed reproduction of Sir Lawrence Dundas and his Grandson by Johann Zoffany (1733-1810) and a paper printed image of a clock face made of cards.
One of the frames is stamped ‘J.M. Paris’ on the reverse.
Elegantly decorated, these charming frames would make a welcome addition to any home space.
