Description
Pair of French gilt bronze and patinated bronze candelabra
French, 20th Century
Height 108cm, width 37cm, depth 32cm
A magnificent pair of 20th-century Empire-style candelabra, these striking decorative pieces showcase the elegance and symbolism of classical design combined with exquisite craftsmanship. Ideal for collectors of antique candelabra and neoclassical interiors, they make an impressive statement in any refined setting.
Each candelabrum features a female figure dressed in flowing classical robes, expertly cast in patinated bronze. Cradled in her arms is a gilt bronze cornucopia overflowing with finely detailed fruits—grapes, pinecones, and other motifs traditionally associated with abundance and prosperity. Rising from the cornucopia are candle branches, extending into naturalistic, foliate arms finished with flower-shaped nozzles, each designed to hold a single candle.
Enhancing their dramatic height and visual impact, the figures are mounted on substantial gilt bronze plinths. The front of each base is decorated with a relief depicting Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of victory, gracefully placing ribbons over a flaming pyre. Laurel wreaths—classical emblems of triumph—adorn the sides, reinforcing the neoclassical theme.
Crafted in the popular Empire style, these antique candelabra combine neoclassical symbolism with delicate Rococo-inspired detailing. Their harmonious balance of form and meaning makes them a superb addition to any collection of period decorative arts or luxury lighting. -
