Bailey Victorian Classical Coin Silver Grapevine Coffee & Tea Set
-
Description
American Victorian Classical coin silver coffee and tea set, ca 1850. This set comprises 6 pieces: Hot water kettle on stand, coffeepot, teapot, creamer, sugar, and waste bowl. Bellied ovoid bodies with domed covers and raised feet. Chased and engraved fruiting grapevines as well as cast same handles, spouts, finials, and foot rims.
The grapevine motif is more often associated with the Dionysian abandonment of inhibition than the corseted decorum of a lady’s at-home reception. The relief ornament and large forms are representative of midcentury wares.
Coffeepot has stamps for New York makers Allcock & Allen and Charters, Cann & Dunn. All other pieces have stamp for Philadelphia retailer Bailey & Co. Very good condition with deep patina.
