Late 17th Century, Lombard Louis XIV Walnut Canterano with Writing Cabinet

Description
An exceptional Lombard chest of drawers, or canterano, from the Brescia region, dating to the full 1600s. Crafted entirely from solid walnut, this imposing piece is a rare example of northern Italian baroque cabinetry that combines both architectural strength and refined decorative detailing. The façade features four drawers, the topmost of which opens to reveal a concealed writing cabinet with a drop-front and a fitted interior of four small drawers, a hidden and practical detail known as scarattole.
The chest is characterized by deeply rusticated panels on the drawer fronts and sides, adding depth and movement to the surface. Each drawer retains its original wrought iron hardware, with hanging drop handles and functional locks, and comes with period-authentic working keys. The piece stands on beautifully carved bracket feet, lending balance to its bold proportions.
With its blend of utility and ornamentation, this canterano exemplifies the opulence and craftsmanship of late 17th-century Lombardy. A rare collector’s item suitable for sophisticated interiors, libraries, or historic restorations.
