Description
Born in Paris into a family of craftsmen, Pierre Chapo was heavily influenced by the modernist movements of the 20th century, and more specifically, the Bauhaus. While also inspired by designers like Charlotte Perriand and Le Corbusier, his work was primarily focused on craftsmanship. Chapo’s passion for wood can be seen in all of his creations, from stools to dining tables, including these "S38A" benches.
Pierre Chapo designed these famed “S38A” benches in 1973. The model is constructed out of French Elm, and it is a classic in the true sense of the word. The natural grain of the elm shines through - its authenticity being celebrated, rather than disguised or embellished. The benches' curves offers fluidity and highlights the organic character of the pieces. Not only does the elm ensure the longevity of the model but it also contributes to the durability. The three legs placed at the base of each bench make sure the two wooden elements which form the seat are stabilised. Not only this, but two stretchers are placed between the legs, essentially each part of the model is secure. These benches showcase the incredible craftsmanship and also present a unique charm; grounded, yet light, through the smart use of curves and the gap in the seat.
The three principles that motivated Pierre Chapo were material, form, and function. He measured his furniture by means of this golden ratio and used elm wood as his preferred material. These benches are a beautiful example of his ideals. These two “S38A” benches fit perfectly with the “SFAX T21 D” table, but could also work very well on their own or even in other setups.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor marks and scratches on the wood.

About the designer:
Pierre Chapo was born in Paris in July 1927, and was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and wood crafts, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduation, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started to travel extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright in Taliesin West. A visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
