Description
Antique cloisonne enamel and gilt bronze clock set
French, 19th Century
Clock height 36cm, width 27cm, depth 14cm, candelabra height 37.5cm
This wonderful cloisonne enamel clock set is an artful piece of design in the Neoclassical style: each piece is elaborately applied with turquoise and green enamels, completed in the cloisonne technique.
The set is made up of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking three light candelabra. The central clock has a shaped ormolu base, set with a panel of cloisonne enamel at the front, and laurel garlands and dolphins' heads at either side. The sides of the clock are also mounted with gilt bronze torches and laurel wreaths, and the clock pediment is surmounted by an enamelled vase with a flame finial.
The clock pediment is set with a central dial applied with red, blue and turquoise enamels, and the movement bears a stamp for Japy Freres, a prolific clockmaking firm operating in the 19th Century.
The pair of candelabra are decorated in a similar fashion, and are modelled as two winged putti on a square base holding three enamelled lights on scrolling foliate gilt bronze arms.
