Oil on oval cardboard depicting a bare-breasted mermaid.
Antique patinated wood frame with glass.
In Mermaid with Oval Frame, Corinne Tichadou summons myths to explore femininity in all its complexity. The figure of the mermaid, depicted with sensuality and mystery, embodies a presence that is both primitive and symbolic. The choice of oval cardboard and old frame evokes portraits from another time, giving the work an aura of timelessness. The mixed technique – watercolour, ink and pastels – reinforces the dreamlike nature of the scene, between aquatic transparency and expressive drawing. This siren, free and silent, questions our gaze, our desires and our inherited narratives.
Corinne Tichadou is a female painter working and living in Southern France. Her painting is contemporary, figurative, mythological, biblical, allegorical and contemplative. It weaves links between the past and the present. Through mythology, tales, theatre, opera, biblical stories and her love for Italian Renaissance painting, she seeks timelessness as a philosophy. She paints the human being and questions it about its relationship to the world: to love, to family, to its courage, to its destiny, to its place in society.
