Description
An elegant nickel-plated brass and faceted glass pendant lamp, attributed to FontanaArte, Italy, 1960s
Nickel-plated brass and finely chiselled glass come together to form a suspended geometric polygon with a subtle, space-age allure. Dating to the mid-1960s, this lamp anticipates the angular lines and sharp silhouettes that would soon become prevalent in domestic interiors.
If one were to ask classical geometry the name of this shape, the answer would be: truncated icosidodecahedron. Though the term may sound technical, this solid belongs to the Archimedean family—ideal geometric forms studied since antiquity for their symmetry and timeless beauty.
The lamp becomes even more captivating when illuminated. The hand-hammered finish of the glass allows light to diffuse in a striking, almost ethereal way, enhancing the material’s quality and craftsmanship. It is precisely because of these elements—the refined design, the nickel-plated brass frame, and the exceptional glass—that this piece is attributed to FontanaArte. The historic Italian manufacturer defined much of the 20th-century decorative style through its masterful use of brass and glass.
