Silver, enamel and cut glass salt and pepper shakers by David Andersen
Norwegian, 20th Century
Height 4.5cm, width 3cm, depth 3cm
Crafted by the esteemed Norwegian artists at David Andersen, this elegant pair of salt and pepper shakers exemplifies the firm's legacy of refined design and artisanal excellence. Founded in 1876 by David Andersen (1843–1901), the firm quickly became synonymous with fine Scandinavian silverware, earning numerous accolades at international exhibitions.
The shakers feature beautifully faceted glass cube bodies, carefully cut to reflect light across their surfaces—bringing a touch of brilliance to everyday tableware. Far from ordinary, these pieces elevate dining presentation with their refined details.
Each piece is crowned with a sterling silver cap, expertly finished with vibrant guilloché enamel. This sophisticated decorative technique begins with precise mechanical engraving - seen here in undulating patterns - onto the silver surface. The engraved design is then filled with coloured glass powder, which is kiln-fired and polished to a high-gloss finish.
The warm orange and golden-yellow enamels add a lively contrast to the clear glass, making these pieces both functional and visually striking.
The silver tops bear the hallmark ‘STERLING 925 S NORWAY’.
Combining decorative artistry with practical use, this finely made duo is a superb addition to any collection of vintage tableware or Scandinavian design.
