Empire period ormolu mantel clock by Le Roy et fils

$ 15,000
  • Description
    Empire period ormolu mantel clock by Le Roy et fils
    French, c. 1810
    Height 36cm, width 37cm, depth 14cm

    This refined mantel clock was created during the Empire period by the esteemed Parisian firm Le Roy et fils, celebrated for their elegant craftsmanship and royal patronage.

    Founded in 1785 by Basile Charles Le Roy and later run by his son Charles-Louis Le Roy, the company counted among its clients Napoleon I and numerous other elite figures. Their reputation extended to Britain, where they established a boutique on London’s New Bond Street and earned a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria for their exceptional timepieces.

    The enamel dial features both Roman and Arabic numerals and is signed ‘Le Roy Hr de Madame / A Paris’, reflecting the firm’s prestige as official horologists to the royal household.

    Uniquely designed with a horizontal arrangement, the clock is integrated into an ormolu table, on which a sculpted planter is displayed. To the right, a classically robed female figure leans forward to water the foliage, her drapery flowing in graceful folds. On the left, a ribbon-draped bookstand bears the Latin inscription ‘VOX LITTERATA ET ARTICULATA DEBITO MODO PRONUNCIATA’ (‘A learned and articulate voice spoken in a correct manner’).

    This imagery echoes Laurent de La Hyre’s (1606-1656) 1650 allegorical painting of Grammar, now in the National Gallery, London. In that composition, Grammar is personified as a classically dressed woman nurturing young plants, her arm similarly draped with a ribbon bearing the same phrase—suggesting a direct visual and thematic reference.

    The entire tableau rests on a richly ornamented ormolu base, embellished with swags, lions, and classical motifs, lending the piece a sense of grandeur and narrative depth.
    An exquisite blend of neoclassical symbolism and mechanical artistry, this clock is not only a timekeeper but a sophisticated object of cultural and aesthetic appeal—ideal for collectors of fine decorative arts.
