            Description

          Standard Glaze Vase with Tulips
Mary Nourse for Rookwood Pottery Co.
1899
This exceptional example of Rookwood’s Standard Glaze was produced in 1899 and was included in the company’s display at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris; the piece retains the original sticker with embossed design produced by Rookwood specifically for this important exhibition on the underside.
The simple form of the vase is decorated with a delicately rendered underglaze motif of tulips in warm earthy tones under a brilliant clear glaze, painted by renowned Rookwood decorator Mary Madeline Nourse (1870-1959). Nourse worked at the company from 1891 until 1905. Nourse’s vases typically depict natural motifs, including birds and flowers with a particular affinity for tulips. Her work for Rookwood is represented in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
This important piece of Rookwood Pottery features impressed firm’s marks, model number, and incised artist’s signature, in addition to the period sticker.
Height: 13 ¼ inches (33.7 cm)
