Description
Collection of semi-precious stones worry and prayer beads
Continental, 20th Century
Shortest: Length 30cm, width 2.5cm
Longest: Length 44cm, width 2cm
This unique assortment presents a rich selection of both prayer beads and worry beads, reflecting centuries-old traditions from various cultural backgrounds.
Worry beads - referred to as komboloi in Greek - are traditionally used in everyday life to ease tension, provide a tactile distraction, or simply pass the time. Often associated with social customs, these non-religious items are popular in regions such as Greece, Cyprus, and across the Middle East.
In contrast, many of the prayer beads in this collection, known as tasbih or tesbih, hold deep spiritual significance within Islamic practice. They are used to count prayers, helping practitioners maintain focus and rhythm during devotional recitations. Like worry beads, they also serve as tools for reflection and mindfulness.
What makes this collection especially noteworthy is the range of materials used. Semi-precious stones such as agate and malachite lend colour and weight to many strands, while amber, highly valued for its beauty and rarity, features prominently.
Each strand is finished with detailed tassels, crafted from either fabric or metal, complementing the overall design.
Rooted in tradition and offering both cultural and aesthetic appeal, this finely curated collection is an exceptional addition to any assemblage of religious or decorative artefacts. -
