Description
Antique French late 18th century gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock
French, Late 18th Century
Height 57cm, width 40cm, depth 12cm
A wonderful example of late 18th century craftsmanship, this refined mantel clock is fashioned from patinated and gilt bronze, reflecting the Neoclassical style that was highly sought after during the period.
Atop the clock sits a meticulously sculpted gilt bronze figure group depicting a cherub riding a deer, thought to represent an allegorical union of love and the natural world. This romantic and symbolic motif sets the tone for the rest of the composition, which is rich in classical and mythological influence.
The clock face features a white enamel dial with crisp black Roman numerals, surrounded by an ornate ormolu frame modelled as intertwined oak branches and foliage. This nature-inspired border enhances the theme of harmony between civilization and the wilderness.
On either side of the dial, two female satyr figures are positioned, each holding an arrow, with one also grasping a small, captured bird. Centrally placed below the dial is another figure, seated on a tree stump, raising a recently caught rabbit toward a patiently waiting dog. The hunting imagery subtly evokes deeper themes, possibly reflecting the age-old tension between innocence and desire, or spirit and instinct.
The clock rests on a rectangular plinth and is supported by decorative ormolu feet, completing its balanced and elegant silhouette.
Telling a story through its design and detail, this antique French clock makes a remarkable addition to any fine collection of 18th-century decorative arts or classical-inspired interiors. -
