Antique French Japonisme gilt bronze and marble pedestal by Maison Marnyhac
French, Late 19th Century
Height 104cm, width 62cm, depth 52cm
This exceptional pedestal, created in the spirit of Japonisme, dates to the late 1800s and showcases the refined craftsmanship of Maison Marnyhac, an esteemed Parisian atelier established in 1865 by Charles de Marnyhac (1840–1897). While Maison Marnyhac executed the production, the pedestal’s imaginative design is credited to Édouard Lièvre (d. 1886), a distinguished French designer renowned for his interpretation of Japanese decorative themes. His signature aesthetic is unmistakable in the unique composition and ornamentation of this piece.
The structure is crowned with a round Rosso Levanto marble top, rich in deep burgundy hues and veining, resting above an ornate gilded bronze frieze. Below, three highly polished elephant heads, each intricately adorned with ceremonial headdresses, serve as the primary supports. Their upward-curving trunks, a traditional motif symbolising prosperity and fortune, add both elegance and meaning to the composition.
Beneath the elephants, the stand transitions into a tripod base crafted from ormolu, featuring a central column with pierced geometric patterns echoing Japanese influence. Decorative tassels, floral accents, and balanced motifs enhance the visual richness. The three legs are united by a curved stretcher, shaped in a concave form that mirrors the piece’s overall flow. At its heart lies a medallion, drawing the eye and grounding the design. The legs themselves sweep gracefully upward, echoing the motion of the elephant trunks above.
A maker’s stamp is clearly visible on the stretcher, reading ‘MAISON MARNYHAC / 1. RUE DE LA PAIX / PARIS’.
This opulently detailed pedestal is ideal for showcasing fine decorative objects or standing alone as a statement piece within a luxurious interior.
