Wherever You Look, You See The Chrysler Building: Midtown Tunnel

$ 7,500
  • Description
    Photographer Mitchell Funk creates a dialogue between New York City's traffic and its architecture. In the present work, Funk fills the foreground with a frenetic pattern of car lights as they enter the Midtown Tunnel. The car lights feature a luminous vertical structure that draws your eye into the city, while the space between the lights forms black vertical structures that mimic silhouetted buildings. The image was shot on location using a Nikon and Kodachrome film. Funk shot the lights and then, on the spot, doubled exposed it onto a silhouetted image of the Midtown skyline. Both images seamlessly pair up. The result is a statement about two realms of a city. The street reflects the city's psyche. There is a graphic mirroring of shapes and colors that unifies both aspects of the picture. After 50 years, the image looks as contemporary as anything in fine art color photography. Besides making a point about city life, it's a highly dramatic masterpiece of design and color, as abstract as it is representational.
    The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years. Wherever You Look, You See The Chrysler Building: Midtown Tunnel - Its elegant Art Deco crown and spirit stand proudly in between the Empire State Building and the Pan Am Building.

    The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
