A splendid 18th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a marvelous game of cherubs, of great pictorial quality. Immersed in an Arcadian landscape, four children are playing blind man's buff, a metaphor for the lightheartedness of youth and an iconographic reference to the blindfolded Cupid. The painting combines delicate tones and compositional grace with a particularly sought-after theme in 18th-century Rococo collecting. The quality and subject matter of the artwork recall the models of the great Piedmontese painter Vittorio Amedeo Rapous (1729-1819). Active primarily in Turin at the Savoy court, he is known for his decorative and allegorical works featuring playful scenes of cherubs. (The painting does not currently come with an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.) 20th-century gilded wood frame, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the frame, and restoration of color in small spots, but is overall in good condition.
