Set of Four Heavily oxidated Copper Alloy Ceremonial Igbo Bells, Nigeria.
This collection of bronze bells originates from central Nigeria and was crafted using the lost-wax casting technique by skilled Igbo metalsmiths. The bells feature minimal circular designs on the top and bottom sections, while the central part retains traces of similar motifs. Ritual bells like these held significant roles in African traditions, serving various purposes such as announcing sacred presences and dispelling hostile or harmful forces. They functioned as tools of communication, portable instruments for conveying vital messages, and even as a form of currency.
The Igbo people, who created such artifacts, are an ethnic group residing in southeastern Nigeria, an area commonly known as Igboland.
