Eames Lounge Chair with Ottoman for Herman Miller, United States, 1970s
-
Description
This 4th generation Eames Lounge Chair with matching ottoman, produced by Herman Miller between 1974 and 1991, is a striking example finished in chocolate-brown leather and the highly prized Rio Palisander veneer (Dalbergia nigra). Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in collaboration with their friend, film director Billy Wilder, the lounge chair first appeared on March 14, 1956, during NBC’s Home television program. Intended to embody the welcoming softness of a well-worn baseball glove, it quickly became an icon of modern design and is still in continuous production today.
This particular piece was acquired in Repaupo, New Jersey, and retains its original maker’s badge and inspector label. It bears all the hallmarks of a true 4th generation model: domes of silence on both chair and ottoman, plastic spacers between the vertical back supports, black cushion clips, and the fiberfill label, all anchored to the signature 7-ply molded plywood shells. The Rio Palisander veneer, regarded as one of the most valuable woods in the world, was outlawed for trade after 1992, making such original examples exceptionally sought after.
The chair has undergone a meticulous restoration: the veneer was stripped, cleaned, repaired with cross-grain layers, and refinished with PU varnish; the four shock mounts were replaced; and all original leather cushions have been carefully cleaned, nourished, and color refreshed. Hardware and aluminum components were electrolytically cleaned, polished, and restored to their original sheen, while custom bushings and preserved “domes of silence” ensure smooth function. The result is a historically correct and beautifully revitalised lounge chair and ottoman, an enduring masterpiece of design history.
