Tile of a Map of Naples.

$ 1,080
  • Description
    Vividly glazed in tones of cobalt blue, aquamarine and oxblood, this unique tile produced by the famed Industria Ceramica Salernitana or I.C.S., depicts the region of Italy where the company was located, along the Mediterranean south of Naples. The map shows Vesuvius spewing smoke, ships in the water, and a fish in the upper righthand corner. I.C.S. was the most important of several pre-war ceramic art studios in Campania, founded in 1927 by Max Malamerson, a German artist. Located in Vietri Sul Mar, I.C.S. promulgated a new form of ceramic art that brought together folk themes with modern art, much as Picasso did two decades later in Vallauris, France. I.C.S. exhibited its ceramics at the II Salernitana d'Arte exhibition in 1933. By 1935, Guido Gambone was the firm's artistic director, so Gambone may have designed and glazed this tile.
