A French elm sideboard attributed to Maison Regain, C. 1960.
-
Description
A beautifully constructed French modernist sideboard, it is crafted from richly grained solid elm. The piece exemplifies the refined, architectural simplicity characteristic of postwar French design—with a strong emphasis on honest materials and understated craftsmanship.
The rectilinear form is balanced by subtle detailing: two tall doors flank two short drawers over two short doors, offering ample storage within. A notable design feature is the concealed locking mechanism on one door—its removable key doubling as the door pull—a discreet and elegant solution emblematic of Regain's minimal yet functional design language.
Inside, the cabinet reveals generous storage with fitted shelving, making it as practical as it is handsome. The warm tone of the elm, along with visible joinery and softened edges, reflect the influence of both Provençal tradition and rural modernism, often seen in the work of Maison Regain. -
