Description
A beautiful wartime coffee or sofa table by Alvar Aalto. This table features the distinctive wartime joints, a construction detail used during and around the Second World War when materials were scarce. This method conserved glue in the iconic L-shaped leg joint. The underside is supported by two pine cross-pieces, and the surface is crafted from a sheet of birch, adorned with natural branch spots that contribute to its authentic character. The table has been carefully surface refinished, leaving a beautiful honey-colored patina.
A practical size for modern living, this table is also a significant collectible. Wartime Aalto furniture is quite rare, even in Finland. The underside of the table retains charming, previous child scribblings, adding a layer of historical warmth and provenance.
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was a world-renowned architect and designer, celebrated for creating complete environments. He designed his own line of furniture and lighting for the numerous buildings he created worldwide. His prolific work spans architecture, furniture, textiles, glassware, sculpture, and painting, though he never regarded himself as an artist, seeing these disciplines as branches stemming from the tree of architecture.
Aalto's career, spanning from the 1920s to the 1970s, is reflected in the evolution of his work, which progressed from Nordic Classicism to Modernism and culminated in a distinctive organic style from the 1940s onward. Together with his wife Aino, Aalto was famous for designing not only buildings but also their interior surfaces, furniture, lamps, and glassware. His furniture designs represent Scandinavian Modernism at its finest, particularly his technical innovations in bent plywood, which profoundly influenced the development of Mid-Century Modernist design.
Aalto's works are highly sought after by collectors and institutions, often achieving record prices at auction. His designs are held in numerous private collections and major museums around the world. -
