Description
Antique Italian ormolu and hardstone mounted cabinet on stand
Italian, Late 19th Century
Height 227cm, width 141cm, depth 46cm
Rich in detail and craftsmanship, this magnificent Italian cabinet on stand dates to the late 19th century but is heavily influenced by the grandeur of 17th-century design. Such pieces were more than functional furniture - they served as status symbols and centrepieces in affluent interiors, often referred to as Wunderkammer, or cabinets of curiosities. These elaborate creations allowed learned and wealthy individuals to store and showcase their treasured collections of rare and exotic items.
This particular cabinet features an impressive architectural design, crowned with a multi-tiered structure. At the top, a central tower displays a clock flanked by two gilded ormolu figures, with a larger figure positioned at the peak. Adding charm, a gilded putto perches on each corner of the upper balcony, appearing to survey the room below.
Beneath the tower, the main body comprises a multitude of compartments designed for both display and storage. Many of the rectangular drawer fronts are inlaid with finely executed pietra dura - a labour-intensive technique in which colourful hardstones are precisely cut and assembled to create decorative scenes. Motifs of birds, insects, and flowers reflect a fascination with the natural world and highlight the artisan's exceptional skill.
At the heart of the cabinet sits a prominent central compartment, framed by a pair of Corinthian columns with an ormolu female figure in the middle. Its ormolu-decorated door opens to reveal four additional interior drawers. Several compartments throughout the piece are lockable.
Complementing the pietra dura panels are vibrant specimen stones, used decoratively throughout to add bursts of colour and texture. The cabinet rests on a series of turned wooden legs, each adorned with stone cartouches that contrast beautifully against the rich, dark wood. A shaped stretcher enhances both the visual balance and structural support, while finely carved finials complete the base with elegance.
With its striking presence, meticulous detail, and historical character, this cabinet on stand offers both beauty and utility. It would serve as an exceptional statement piece in a traditional or eclectic interior, ideal for collectors and connoisseurs of decorative arts. -
