Description
Very large French patinated bronze figural sculpture of Apollo after Picault
French, Late 19th Century
Height 167cm, width 66cm, depth 40cm
This late 19th century bronze figure is crafted in a rich patinated finish and draws inspiration from the work of renowned French sculptor Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915). The statue represents Apollo, the revered deity of music, healing, light, and prophecy in ancient Greek and Roman mythology.
The life-size sculpture captures Apollo in a poised stance, slightly leaning to one side with his gaze cast downward. One arm rests naturally by his side, while the other extends forward, partially wrapped in a flowing shawl draped over his shoulder and arm, trailing gracefully toward the base. Aside from a decorative cluster of leaves and branches serving as modest covering, the figure’s form is largely exposed, emphasizing classical ideals of beauty.
Elevated upon a stepped circular plinth, the sculpture gains an added sense of majesty and presence. The base is marked with a forged signature reading ‘E. PICAULT’, typical of reproductions or works styled after the original artist.
With its commanding scale and neoclassical elegance, this bronze piece is a versatile artwork suitable for both indoor display and garden settings. - More Information
