17th century Italian painting, David with the Head of Goliath
-
Description
Italian school painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting David, the biblical hero, captured in the moment of triumph with the head of Goliath. The story goes that a young shepherd, inexperienced with weapons, managed to defeat the giant warrior Goliath with a stone thrown from his sling.
The artwork is striking for its skillful use of color and the elegance of the protagonist, with his idealized face and androgynous beauty, in stark contrast to the dramatic expression of his defeated enemy. This element, combined with the extraordinary chromatic vivacity, highlights the hand of a cultured artist, close to the great tradition of Emilian classicism.
A painting with a powerful scenic and emotional impact, capable of enhancing classical or contemporary settings thanks to its universal subject: the victory of the youth over oppression, of beauty over brutality. Non-contemporary 19th-century frame in finely carved and gilded wood, with some loss of gilding (see photo). The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 71 x W 53 cm. - More Information
