Description
A large glazed ceramic vase circa 1978 made by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). Toshiko's work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition, aesthetics and philosophy.
The relatively large hand-built vase takes the shape of a simple cachepot with a robust body and slightly everted opening. The surface is covered with the iconic mottled glaze known by the artist. The dark rich brown color covers the lower portion of the vase and gradually rises and morphs into a beige light brown with hues of yellow, grey and green inclusions. The randomly occurred patterns were organically form in the kiln and showcases a strong sense of wabi-sabi. Turning the vase, one is greeted with different sceneries. The base is glazed and carved with the artist's insignia.
The bowl is a from a private American collection where the owner purchased it circa 1978 directly from the artist.
