A Rare Italian Gilt Zinc Decorated Iron King Bed, C. 1870.
-
Description
Crafter of twin beds, this wonderful king bed has double shaped headboards rise in graceful arched and scrolled silhouettes, crowned with ball finials and joined by twisted column uprights. The footboards are straight across, but are decorated on an equally appealing scale, creating a harmonious balance.
Both head and foot panels are inset with striking black lacquered fields, richly embellished with gilded foliate scrollwork, strapwork, and classical motifs. At the center of each design is a medallion mask framed by scrolling acanthus and arabesque flourishes, a nod to Renaissance Revival taste. The decoration is heightened by corner spandrels and border detailing.
The beds stand on turned and tapering legs with gilt accents, the forms further enhanced by rope-twist side columns that lend a sense of movement and vertical lift. The overall effect combines strength and elegance, making these beds a striking expression of the Italian decorative ironworking tradition of the 19th century.
In 40 years of business, we have never seen a bed frame like this! This versatile size will accommodate a King or a California King size mattress. In order separate and use as two twins, two side rails would need to be crafted. If a customer were to make two new rails the measurements for a single bed would be 35" w. x 83.5".
Overall King Interior: 73.5" x 83.5"
This bed would need a platform or inner frame to support bedding. -
