This beautiful black on red shallow bowl is being attributed to Nampeyo, who is the “matriarch” of contemporary Hopi pottery. She worked in traditional ways, coiling, slipping and painting the design with mineral paints. Nampeyo made polychrome pots and she is also known to have made red pots with black painted designs. Her pottery was not signed, as was the tradition at the time.
Nampeyo was well recognized during her lifetime as a superior artist. Her work is in many museums and private collections. This bowl is coming from a private collection by descent and this is the first time it is being offered for sale in many, many years. -
