Description
Photographer Mitchell Funk creates a minimalist statement by capturing the interaction of two lighter-than-air substances. Horizontal clouds and a vertical jet gas exhaust interact to form a grid structure. The plane rises almost in stages as if the clouds represent different levels on a chart. The result is a striking, dramatic, and original skyscape that is imbued with symbolic meaning that would intrigue Maslow.
One could interpret this image in several ways, but the immediate reading is rising with determination to a higher level, perhaps to a state of transcendence. Except for the plane, the pictorial elements of floating clouds and lighter-than-air gas support the concept of going beyond ordinary limits, beyond one's physical requirement, or everyday experience to a higher, perhaps spiritual realm. Artistically, the image is highly visual and memorable for its utter simplicity.
The image also represents the trajectory of Mitchell Funk's oeuvre, which for 55 years has kept on going up.
The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, 43 x 29 - and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
