Description
Matched pair of French ormolu and marble mounted pedestals
French, Early 20th Century
Height 115cm, width 40/42cm, depth 31/33cm
This elegant pair of early 20th century pedestals is designed in the refined Louis XVI style, an aesthetic that flourished in late 18th century France. Known for its emphasis on symmetry, classical motifs, and geometric precision, the style is beautifully captured in the design of these pieces.
Each pedestal is surmounted by a square marble top, bordered with a fine gilt-bronze (ormolu) beaded edge. Directly beneath lies a striking frieze, where geometric parquetry panels are framed in shimmering ormolu. The central front panel is particularly ornate, featuring a large medallion with a classical scene, flanked by floral swags and crowned with a ribbon motif.
The body of each pedestal tapers gracefully towards a stepped base, continuing the decorative program with a twisted floral garland placed at the centre. A smaller yet refined gilt-bronze mount enhances the front of the stand, uniting the upper and lower sections in a cohesive design.
Richly adorned and finely executed, this pair of pedestals offers both decorative appeal and functional use, serving as an impressive platform for the display of treasured works of art or refined decorative objects. -
