Two Danish ‘Flora Danica’ porcelain tureens by Royal Copenhagen
Danish, 20th Century
Height 17cm, diameter 23cm
These exceptional tureens are part of the legendary Flora Danica porcelain service, produced by the Royal Copenhagen manufactory in Denmark. Originally conceived in the late 18th century, this iconic dinner service was more than an artistic achievement - it was also a diplomatic gift. During the war between Russia and Sweden in 1788–89, Denmark, allied with Russia, failed to provide the support expected. To mend relations, King Christian VII commissioned a bespoke dinner service in 1790, drawing inspiration from the Flora Danica botanical booklets, first published in 1752. Sadly, Empress Catherine II passed away before the service was completed in 1802.
Each piece of the service is painstakingly hand-painted with detailed botanical illustrations, and each is signed on the underside with the Latin name of the plant depicted. This dedication to craftsmanship has ensured that the Flora Danica tradition continues today, with pieces still made in limited editions.
The tureens themselves are a striking combination of pure white porcelain and meticulously painted flora. Rectangular panels of gilding alternate with delicate floral motifs, while a more prominent border, partially rendered in high relief, frames the rims. The lids feature matching decoration alongside vividly rendered plant illustrations. Three-dimensional handles, shaped like flowering branches, add a sculptural quality that enhances the realism of the painted designs. The level of artistry and precision is exceptional.
On the reverse of the lids, each tureen bears two Royal Copenhagen marks, shape numbers, and the Latin names of the plants: one reads ‘Alnus glutinosa Willd’ (European alder), while the other reads ‘Convolvulus arvensis L’ (field bindweed).
Celebrating over two centuries of design excellence, these Flora Danica tureens are a magnificent addition to any porcelain collection, combining historical significance with timeless artistry.
