Description
Early Warren McArthur Style No. 642-3 Terrace Settee, designed circa 1933–34 and produced in 1937, representing one of the earliest outdoor seating models from McArthur’s celebrated anodized-aluminum line. The frame demonstrates his patented tubular construction method — aluminum members joined by precision compression fittings — which defined his mature style of lightweight structural design.
All patents remain in place, confirming period manufacture. The settee retains its original proportions and characteristic “donut” rubber feet, an enduring McArthur signature. The anodized aluminum finish shows light age character from long-term use outdoors on the California South Coast. The original lacquer was stabilized and re-lacquered to preserve the surface without over-restoration.
The Sunbrella decking, installed roughly twenty to thirty years ago, provides durable and historically sympathetic support while maintaining the open-frame aesthetic of McArthur’s terrace pieces. Measuring 75 inches wide, it offers the generous yet refined proportions typical of the designer’s mid-1930s output — functional, elegant, and distinctly modern.
Offered as is following professional conservation, this labeled and cataloged example represents an authentic and increasingly uncommon survivor from McArthur’s pre-aviation years, when his furniture designs foreshadowed his later innovations in aircraft seating. -
