Description
This exceptional coffee / side table was produced by a Swedish master cabinetmaker in the 1940s. The sculptural tabletop bears a remarkable resemblance to early Josef Frank work for Haus & Garten, indicating a potential connection to Frank’s circle or a highly accomplished contemporary working in the same idiom.
Executed in richly figured mahogany, the table features a striking cloud-form top composed of deep, flowing lobes that create a soft, biomorphic silhouette — a refined expression of Scandinavian organic modernism of the period. The book-matched surface displays impressive depth and movement, with light playing across the top in alternating tones depending on the viewing angle, revealing a beautiful directional grain and natural chatoyance. The top is supported by four elegant tapered legs, underscoring its sculptural presence.
Rare in form, this piece represents the finest tradition of Swedish cabinetmaking in the 1940s, combining sculptural expressiveness with the calm, measured simplicity that defines the region’s early organic modernism. This table functions beautifully as a side table, accent table, or intimate coffee table.
Fully restored and refinished; very good condition. -
