Ceramic Vase with Unique Glaze by Otto Natzler

A bespoken ceramic vase in stemmed cylindrical form by Otto Natzler (1908-2007) made in 1990. The stoneware vase showcases a distinctive glaze on the black surface, achieved with a copper metallic crater reduction firing. The surface, as a result, appears volcanic like, with a unique crusty texture embedded with patches of gold and orange iridescence. Inside of the stem foot, the piece was signed and dated to underside 'Otto Natzler 1990' with impressed artist's cipher 'ON VIII' and archive number 'X575'. The vase is best appreciated under dim angled light under which the shimmering glaze reveals its subtle and magical beauty.
Otto Natzler was an Austrian American potter who escaped from Vienna with his wife Gertrud (1908-1971) in 1938. For the next decades until Gertrud/s death, the couple worked in the studio together and produced some of the most admired Modern pottery in a wide range of form and glaze. Otton continued to work until his old age and never ceased to explore new forms and innovative glaze.
