Description
Chinese Imari porcelain planter on a wooden stand
Chinese, 20th Century
Jardinière: Height 30cm, diameter 38cm
Base: Height 21cm, diameter 36cm
Overall: Height 51cm, diameter 38cm
This 20th century jardinière is an elegant example of Chinese interpretations of the Imari style. First developed in 17th century Japan, Imari ware was produced in the Arita region and exported widely through the port of Imari, becoming prized across Europe and Asia for its vivid enamels and distinctive decorative flair. By the modern era, these striking patterns had come to represent a cherished link to traditional craftsmanship and were highly sought after by collectors.
Formed in the classic fish-bowl shape, the vessel recalls containers once used in China to house goldfish - creatures long associated with prosperity - before the form became popular for use as planters. Its surface is adorned with richly layered hues of blue, red, gold, and black arranged in stylized, nature-inspired motifs. Several marks can be seen within the interior, adding to its character.
A carved wooden stand accompanies the jardinière, its gracefully curved legs joined by a circular stretcher. The deep tones of the wood set off the lighter porcelain beautifully. Together, the stand and bowl create a refined display piece well suited to enhancing both interior and garden settings. -
