This grand and beautifully executed still life by Marc-Laurent Bruyas (French, 1821–1896) highlights the artist’s refined approach to botanical subjects and his strong roots in the Lyon school of painting. A pupil of Grobon, Thierriat, and Bonnefond at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, Bruyas developed a reputation for exquisitely detailed depictions of flowers and fruit, working in both oil and gouache. His career included regular appearances at the Lyon Salon for nearly four decades, as well as exhibitions in Paris and Dijon. Beyond his artistic practice, he held the post of director at a municipal drawing school, and several of his works are now held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.

The composition centres on an unexpectedly suspended basket of orchids—an arresting and unconventional choice for a still life. Various species tumble outward in vibrant clusters, their petals illuminated against a softly painted botanical backdrop. Shades of pink, gold, white, and green mingle harmoniously, demonstrating the artist’s command of colour and his close observation of plant structure. The surrounding foliage, painted with atmospheric softness, creates a sense of depth that accentuates the cascading arrangement. This unusual presentation lends the scene both drama and delicacy, setting it apart from more traditional floral images of the period.

Presented in an ornate giltwood frame that complements the painting’s decorative grandeur, the work retains a strong presence suitable for a refined interior. The signature ‘M. Bruyas’ appears at the lower left of the canvas.

Richly coloured, beautifully composed, and representative of Bruyas’s mature style, this still life offers an elegant and distinctive addition to any collection of 19th-century floral art.
