This substantial late 19th-century hunting painting is by Edward Armfield (British, 1817–1896), one of Britain’s most admired Victorian animal painters. Known for his animated portrayals of dogs and his ability to convey their distinct characters, Armfield created compositions that blend gentle humour, technical finesse, and an intimate understanding of sporting life.

Set within a rustic game room, the scene depicts three dogs gathered near a table heaped with freshly taken game. The central dog stands keenly alert, its attention fixed on the arrangements before it, while two companions recline peacefully beside one another. Armfield’s sensitive observation of animal behaviour is evident in their poses, expressions, and the luminous treatment of their coats.

The surrounding interior enriches the narrative: hanging implements, ceramic jars, a game bag, and wooden shelves all contribute to the atmosphere of a working country house. Subtle lighting effects highlight the textures of plumage and fur and deepen the warm, homely feel of the composition. The painting is signed ‘E. Armfield’ at the lower right, with a canvas maker’s stamp on the reverse, further confirming its period production.

Housed in a magnificent giltwood frame of notable scale, the work carries significant decorative impact. Its combination of size, subject, and technical refinement makes it an ideal centrepiece for collectors of British sporting art and Victorian canine painting.
