Italian Louis XVI Walnut Marquetry Chest, Late 18th Century
-
Description
An elegant Italian Louis XVI-period chest of drawers, finely veneered and richly inlaid, dating to the late 18th century. Crafted from select walnut with geometric and diamond-pattern marquetry, it reflects the refined neoclassical style that defined the reign of Louis XVI. The rectangular top sits above three drawers, each framed by delicate banding and fitted with original circular brass pulls and escutcheons. The clean lines, tapered legs, and balanced proportions embody the restrained sophistication of the period while allowing the natural warmth of the wood to shine. Its construction reveals the precision and grace of Italian cabinetmakers working under French influence—functional yet noble, decorative yet understated. In excellent overall condition, it would benefit from minor conservative restoration. A timeless piece that bridges classical craftsmanship and enduring modern appeal.
