Sold Sold
  • Description
VICTORIAN PAINTING OF A PICTURESQUE DEVONSHIRE LANDSCAPE
    English School, 19th century

With a farmer strolling down a dirt path towards his cottage while sheep graze in the pasture

Oil on canvas | Unsigned, attributed verso to "W. Williams"

    16 1/8" H x 20 1/8" W [frame]
    10 1/8" H x 14 1/8" W [canvas]

A lovely landscape featuring broad open meadows before rolling hills and a brilliant blue sky scattered with finely developed cloud cover, the sole figure in the scene is a young farmer strolling down the well-worn dirt path towards (presumably) home. Sheep graze throughout the green meadows before his home and exquisitely detailed tree cover shades his approach. A very beautifully executed work in oil on canvas, the old label on the reverse attributes it as having been a pair at one point painted by a "W. Williams".

Condition: Minor craquelure throughout. Carefully cleaned and resealed in traditional Damar varnish by our conservator. Hung in a modern frame. A fine picture in excellent condition, ready to place.
