Description
Chinese export porcelain pseudo tobacco leaf plate, with a scalloped edge, decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels with rosettes (stylized cross-sections of a pomegranate), leaves, flowers and rings.
The so-called tobacco leaf and pseudo tobacco leaf patterns were popular from about 1765 until the second quarter of the 19th century. The first effort to organize and catalogue the known variants was published in 2013 by Pierre L. Debomy in his French and English language book, Tobacco Leaf and Pseudo- a Tentative Inventory. In it, he identifies and describes 24 tobacco leaf patterns and 37 pseudo tobacco leaf patterns. This plate is catalogued as Pattern B2, described and illustrated on pages 146-149.
Compare this plate with the pair of similar plates offered on this site. While the patterns are nearly identical, the quality of the painting on this example is far superior. -
