Description
26 Star American Flag, made for 1844 Presidential campaign of Henry Clay and Theodore Frelinghuysen. Michigan joined the Union as the 16th State on January 26, 1837. Clay's portrait set within an oak leaf and gear cog medallion. The word TAYLOR is written in black backwards across Clay's portrait which is a mystery. The 26 stars representing the earliest known count on printed flag. Michigan joined the Union as the 26th state on January 26, 1837. The 26 star flag became official on July 4th of that year and remained so until 3rd, 1845. Clay's platform focused on promotion of agriculture and protective TARIFFS. Clay and Taylor were politically rivals despite belonging to the same party. In 1848, many WHIGS believed CLAY could not win the presidency and instead threw their support behind the popular war heo TAYLOR, which explains the words TAYLOR written across Clay's portrait. See an example in Threads of History page 117.
