Austrian 19th Century Set of Four Biedermeier Chairs

An extraordinary group of four Biedermeier walnut “shovel chairs” in the style of Josef Danhauser (Vienna, Austria) circa 1815. Each chair features an exaggerated, curled backrest in walnut veneer featuring exotic grain patterns that symbolize the distinctive taste of the Biedermeier period. Each backrest is ebonized around the edge for a dramatic contrast to the amber-gold tones of the frame. Evidence of spalting within some of the maple frames is another naturally occurring phenomenon that adds further visual interest to the ensemble. The seats appear to be more recently upholstered in a striped fabric of gold with tiny white dots, offering both comfort and another element of refinement. Note the cushions are removable, facilitating easy maintenance or future reupholstery. Sturdy chair bases feature clean-lined flat legs on the front and slightly sabered legs to the back. They have been cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax–ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images. Sold as a set of four.
