Description
This Tiffany Favrile Glass Cabinet Vase is an exceptional example of the cameo glass produced by Tiffany Studios in the first years of the 20th century.
Likely inspired by Chinese cameo glass, the vase characterized by a decorative motif in low relief achieved through a technically complex process in which a core layer of vibrant yellow glass was covered by an opaque layer of bright red glass which was then cut back by a skilled artisan to create the design.
This example features a motif of thin gnarled branches and wide leaves with veining and serrated edges, likely referencing the woodbine. Two small looped handles were applied on either side of the rounded shoulder and subsequently carved to blend with the decorative motif; one of the handles was cleverly carved to appear as the stem of one of the leaves.
A related example is in the permanent collection of the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington, England.
This rare example of Tiffany Favrile Glass is inscribed on the underside with signature and date code.
