Description
Max Neufeldt Metal Collage – Assemblage Sculpture, circa 1975
Comes with Certificate of Authenticity from the Estate of Max Neufeldt
An exceptional example of Max Neufeldt’s mature assemblage work, this circa-1975 metal and wood collage exemplifies his poetic yet industrial aesthetic. Nailed steel elements interlock with found objects—against a warm wooden substrate, forming a dynamic, geometric composition. Signed “Neufeldt” on the verso and presented with a Certificate of Authenticity, the piece radiates the artist’s signature nostalgia for everyday materials.
Key Features
• Mixed Media: Patinated steel, welded found objects, solid wood backing
• Signature Assemblage: Geometric arrangement of repurposed industrial items
• Artist’s Mark: Hand-signed “Neufeldt” on reverse
• Documentation: Includes Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Estate of Max Neufeldt
• Display Ready: Wall-mount hardware installed
Dimensions
• Height: 36″ (91.4 cm)
• Width: 30″ (76.2 cm)
• Depth: 2″ (5.1 cm)
Condition
Very good original vintage condition. Minimal surface wear and natural patina on metal components are consistent with age and integral to the work’s character. Wood backing is sturdy with only light handling marks.
Artist Background
Max Neufeldt (1938–2025) studied at Ohio Wesleyan University and earned his MFA from Pratt Institute. Based in California, he gained acclaim in Venice and Santa Barbara for transforming quotidian objects—cheese graters, cake pans, keys—into contemplative sculptural narratives. His works have been exhibited at the Pasadena Art Museum and featured in leading California design publications.
Provenance
Private California Collection → Certificate from the Estate of Max Neufeldt
Why This Piece Matters
This rare, original Neufeldt collage captures the artist’s skillful balance of industrial ruggedness and lyrical composition. Perfect for collectors of postwar American assemblage, mid-century sculpture, or anyone seeking a conversation-starting centerpiece for a gallery wall. -
