Set of eight chairs in beech and rope, by Colombo Sanguineti, Italy, 1950s

This set of ladder-back chairs is a refined example of Italian post-war seating, distinguished by a light and elegant silhouette and a clear structural logic. The design is defined by a tall, gently curved slatted backrest and a slender beechwood frame, resulting in balanced proportions and a restrained, functional expression.

The chairs are crafted in beech, shaped with smooth, tapered profiles that emphasise lightness and precision. The ladder-back arrangement introduces a subtle vertical rhythm, while the hand-caned rope seats provide a tactile contrast to the wooden structure and reinforce the artisanal quality of the pieces.

The model belongs to the Chiavarina tradition, developed in Chiavari in the early 19th century and renowned for its exceptional lightness, structural efficiency, and enduring elegance. By the mid-20th century, the Chiavarina had become a widely recognised symbol of Italian furniture culture, valued for its ability to bridge historical craftsmanship and modern sensibilities.

Produced in Italy in the 1950s by Colombo Sanguineti, the set reflects a mature interpretation of this tradition, combining time-honoured construction principles with post-war manufacturing standards.

The chairs are in very good condition and have been professionally restored by our internal atelier. The beech frames have been carefully cleaned, stabilised, and refinished to preserve the original surfaces and enhance the natural warmth of the wood. The seats have been newly caned using traditional techniques. Minor signs of wear consistent with age and use are present and should be considered normal.
