Following an artist residency in Dakar in 2010, Pierre Muckensturm developed a long-term exploration of the coexistence between two opposing forces: the freedom of the curved line and the rigour of geometric, orthogonal construction.
Today, his practice is defined by radical simplification and a highly structured conceptual approach. He creates series based on pre-established principles, using repetition and modular variation to test—and subtly disrupt—formal systems. A central element of his work is the importance given to residual space: whites, voids, unpainted areas, and deliberately unfinished zones, where tension and meaning are allowed to emerge.
His recent works make visible the “disturbance” caused when curvature enters strict geometry, resulting in compositions that feel both controlled and playful—rigorous yet quietly rebellious. -
