Description
A late Louis XVI provincial French demi-lune gate-leg dining table in solid walnut, Avignon region, circa 1780–1795. The table features an early pull-out extension system, a rare precursor to 19th-century extension dining tables, with turned tapering legs terminating in brass sabots and casters. It has been restored with traditional French polish, and the later extension leaves have been sympathetically fabricated in period walnut.
Crafted from richly figured walnut, the table displays warm color and pronounced grain, enhanced by a lustrous hand-applied French polish that brings depth and patina to the surface. Its oval form creates an elegant and welcoming presence, suitable for both formal dining and intimate gatherings. Three removable leaves (19 1/8″ × 54″ each) allow the table to expand to seat approximately 10–12 guests, offering both historical interest and practical versatility.
This is a distinguished Louis XVI dining table combining provincial craftsmanship, early engineering innovation, and timeless decorative appeal. -
