Description
WILLIAM IV TEAL PAINTED MARBLE TOP LOW COFFEE TABLE
Probably Anglo-Indian, circa 1840 | with a modern green marble inset top
17 1/4" H x 24 1/2" D x 45 3/4" W
There is a quiet strength to this 19th-century William IV period low table: its worn, teal-and-olive green paint softened by time, the legs turned with an almost architectural rhythm, the robust iron strapping in the corners. The fluting is bold and deliberate, not fussy; the table’s proportions are low and grounded, evoking the practical, adaptable designs that emerged from British colonial life in India.
The verde marble top with its dark chevron pattern is a modern replacement and plays harmoniously with the hue of the table, an overall utilitarian form that today serves perfectly as a storied coffee table with a rich surface history. It likely began life as a charpoy base, a merchant’s platform, or something similarly useful before being repurposed into a fabulous coffee table: the center of family life. Note the powerful iron straps that lock each of the four legs together over the complex turned and tapered legs with bulbous swollen reeding over and above ring-turnings. A fabulous statement piece.
Condition: Modern green marble top with minor wear and scuffing. Edge wear around rim. Wear to painted surface throughout, beautifully patinated. Paint layer is old, originality unknown. Reinforcement to the interior with an added fore-aft bar across the middle, shimming of edges to level the frame. Sturdy and strong. Ready to place.
