Description
REGENCÉ PERIOD WALNUT COMMODE WITH BIRD-FORM PULLS
France, circa 1750
Item # 010PXZ21Q-2
A fabulous French commode of the Regencé period, this substantial chest of drawers has been beautifully preserved. The dense walnut wood has taken on the most lovely historical surface with a silky glowing patina from centuries of gentle handling, the oils from hands oxidizing against the dense wood while countless wax applications have turned made a perfect silky surface.
The form is most attractive with a "cupid's bow" curvature to the facade that is matched in the thumb-molded top, which projects just slightly over all sides. With three equal drawers mounted with generous bird-form cast brass handles (period replacements), they are easily operated despite the heavy construction.
The chest is constructed in the typical manner of the period with each major joint secured with a glued tenon affixed with a wooden pins. The sides of the chest are set with two raised panels in a grooved frame and the back of the chest is also crafted using four individual panels set in frames (two panels replaced). The entire commode is raised on gently cabriole legs.
Such a rich and interesting piece, this is a true strikepoint that is both gorgeous and highly functional with generous storage, extraordinary strength in the masculine form, a fabulous undulating form that is most eye-catching and a rich, warm and silky patina throughout.
Measurements: 38 1/4" H x 26 7/8" D x 53" W
Condition Report:
The intricate bird-form pulls are early replacements; shadows in the finish show the faint outline of prior pulls. Edge loss to top right drawer. Back right corner with extra wooden pins through the tenon-mortised frame for support; a few other old pins added for support in other joints. Two backboard panels replaced. Extensive wear and discoloration, top with extensive old scratching and scuffing, all beautifully aged and now a part of the overall surface patina. No key (locks untested). -
