Description
Torbjørn Afdal was an important figure in postwar Norwegian design, known for combining Scandinavian restraint with a subtle sense of refinement and material richness. Working closely with Vamo Møbelfabrikk, Afdal developed furniture that emphasized craftsmanship, proportion, and understated elegance. While rooted in the broader Scandinavian modern movement, his work often carries an expressive character, especially through the use of rich woods and carefully shaped details.
Model “113” demonstrates this philosophy through its harmonious proportions and refined construction. The round tabletop features a carefully composed wooden pattern, that looks almost as if it were arranged in a radial formation, through the complexities of the grain. The subtle effect draws attention to the natural beauty of the material. This decorative element remains controlled and elegant, not overwhelming the simplicity of the form. The table edge is gently tapered, giving the top a lighter visual profile and preventing it from appearing heavy. Beneath the surface, the base is shaped with restraint, transitioning smoothly into the legs and reinforcing the table’s structural integrity. The four legs are slender, lending the table a poised and balanced stance. Their clean lines contrast with the expressive grain of the tabletop, creating a dialogue between structure and surface.
Sleek yet beautiful, this piece is suitable for both dining and more intimate gathering spaces. Model “113” exemplifies Afdal’s ability to elevate a simple form through material selection, precise detailing, and thoughtful craftsmanship, resulting in a dining table that is both functional and visually distinguished.
