A Fine Japanese Meiji Period Antique Bronze Sculpture of a Samurai Warrior

$ 8,500
  • Description
    BRONZE OKIMONO OF A SAMURAI
    Japan, Meiji Period, circa late 19th century

    Patinated sand-cast and engraved bronze, unmarked

    20 1/2" H x 6 1/8" D x 9 3/4" W

    ref. 512SBP06X

    A finely modeled Japanese bronze okimono depicting a standing samurai shifting his center of gravity onto his back leg while raising the bow staff for a strike. The figure is dressed in flowing robes that fall in stylized angular folds around his body, the garments animated by the subtle twist of the torso, the extended reach of the arms and the gentle contrapposto pose. His head is slightly tilted upward while his eyes remain totally focused below - a quiet intensity that is quite serious and effective.

    The bronze is finished in a rich medium-brown chemical patina with complex reddish undertones across the figure, the staff retaining a contrasting burnished bronze surface. The robes are extensively engraved with decorative motifs depicting dragons, scrolls, flames, floral patterns and other stylized emblems distributed across the garment. These engraved details are lightly incised and appear in repeating medallion-like reserves throughout the surface of the robe.

    It is noteworthy just how precisely the figure is executed. An object of extraordinary skill, sand-cast from numerous pieces that are very painstakingly joined invisibly using roman pins (several now actually visible from time).

    Condition: Very good overall condition with light wear consistent with age, including some relief to raised elements including the tips of his outmost toe. Very slightly raised roman pins in a few areas (arm joints, wrist joint). Subtle curve to the bow staff. Patina well preserved.
